2023 Conference Outcomes

What is viable development in our new urbanity?

In the ‘Productive and Economic’ session theme on Day Two of the 2023 Urbanism Aotearoa Conference, we took a deep dive into the dynamic of urbanity and explore how it impacts the commercial imperatives driving investment. Our speakers discussed the challenges faced by society, the need for affordable solutions, and the importance of creating a unified vision for the future of our cities.

Affordability: a crucial challenge

One of the biggest issues faced by our society is affordability, both in terms of the cost of living and housing. The high cost of living puts a strain on individuals and families, making it difficult to meet their basic needs. Additionally, the soaring housing prices make it challenging for people to find affordable and suitable housing options.

Planning for better land use

Our current pattern of land use and urbanism are contributing to poor health outcomes. Lack of green spaces, limited access to recreational areas, and inadequate infrastructure for physical activities all contribute to a sedentary lifestyle and associated health problems. It is imperative to prioritize public health while designing urban spaces.

Fostering connections

Developing spatial plans that support both transport and land use in partnerships with multiple agencies is vital for fostering connections within a city. Well-connected urban areas enhance the productivity and economic growth of a region. By creating well-integrated transportation systems and providing ample opportunities for social interaction, we can enhance the overall livability of our cities.

Aotearoa New Zealand has a complex web of institutions with the same objectives – there is an opportunity for a single urban land authority to drive more cohesive development outcomes.

Our speakers discussed that focusing on Kainga and supporting Whenua and communities is essential for our wellbeing.  By creating spaces that promote cultural exchange, social cohesion, and a sense of belonging, we can enhance the overall quality of life in our cities.

Urbanity and wellbeing

The dynamic of urbanity has a profound impact on the productivity and economy of our cities. By addressing the challenges of affordability, improving land use planning, prioritising physical health, fostering connections, emphasising culture, streamlining systems, and focusing on key areas of action, we can create vibrant and sustainable urban environments.

This session discussed actions areas including clarifying institutional responsibility; encouraging conversations to exchange ideas and collaboration for better urban development; the need for better and more consistent definition of ‘medium density’ to ensure effective planning; considering the unique characteristics and aspirations of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland for a unified vision of its future; and planning for different models of uncertainty in our urban systems for adapting to our changing times.
